The town of Žďár nad Sázavou lies in the Vysočina Region, on the Sázava River on both sides of the historic Czech-Moravian provincial border.

In the town there is a former important Cistercian monastery, the Well of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the Baroque period, its abbot Václav Vejmluva had a number of buildings in the town and its surroundings built or renovated. Their architect was Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. One of them, the pilgrimage church of St. John of Nepomuk, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
