The royal town of Klatovy was founded in 1260 by the Czech king Přemysl Otakar II. Over the centuries, the town has taken on its present form, preserving the unique atmosphere of bygone times in the form of several historical architectural complexes.
The town lies in the foothills of the Šumava mountains near the southwestern border of the Czech Republic with the Federal Republic of Germany, 40 km south of Plzeň. Klatovy is a modern town with a rich historical tradition.
Klatovy enjoys a vibrant cultural and social life. It attracts residents and visitors with a varied offer of cultural programs, exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, lectures, celebrations, and other events.
A newly built cycle path runs through the town itself, and several other cycling routes connect to it, linking the Klatovy region with Šumava. Tourists will also appreciate the extensive network of marked hiking trails in the surrounding area.
