The small town of Švihov lies in the floodplain of the Úhlava River and consists of two parts: the Lower Town, which borders the castle, and the Upper Town further to the north. Both parts have spacious squares, and on the edge of the Upper Town stands the parish church of Saint Wenceslas.
The late Gothic Švihov Castle stands unusually in a flat valley. The Úhlava River, along which an old trade route from Bavaria ran, determined both the location where the town was founded and the form of the medieval castle. The Lords of Rýzmburk made perfect use of the surrounding natural element here and built a vast and ingenious water fortress.
