The exact date of the founding of the town of Karlovy Vary is not known. Permanent settlement around the Vřídlo hot spring arose in the mid-14th century. In 1370, the town was granted the privileges of a royal town by Charles IV. The local spa tradition is based on the use of mineral water with therapeutic effects, which originates in granitic crystalline rock at depths of around 2,000 meters. The water here has a beneficial effect on the treatment of liver and intestinal diseases, as well as on the stomach and liver. The town contains numerous spa houses. The highest concentration of spa houses and monuments is located in the spa center of the town, along the Teplá River. A large part of the monuments has a distinctive spa character, such as colonnades, spa buildings, or historic hotels. Above the spa center there are also lookout towers and numerous viewpoints supplemented by various sights.
