Liberec is a statutory city in northern Bohemia and the seat of the Liberec Region. It has roughly 105 thousand inhabitants and is thus the fifth largest Czech city.

The surroundings of the city as well as the city itself offer a large number of opportunities for a wide variety of sports practiced both at amateur and professional levels. For recreational sports, local residents use the surrounding mountains, which create ideal conditions especially for hiking, cycling tourism, and cross-country skiing. On Ještěd, a sports complex has been built for downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, and ski jumping; a cross-country skiing area, the Vesec Cross-Country Area, is also being developed. For sports directly in the city, it is possible to use the Tipsport Arena, a modern multifunctional arena that is the home venue of the ice hockey club Bílí Tygři Liberec, the U Nisy Football Stadium, the home stadium of Slovan Liberec, or the swimming pool.
