Brno is the second-largest city in the Czech Republic, the largest and historic capital of Moravia. Brno is an important administrative center, a hub of Czech justice, the seat of bodies with nationwide supervisory authority, and other important institutions. It is also a center of education with 26 faculties of eleven universities and higher-education institutions. The city’s most notable landmarks include Špilberk Castle and the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul (better known as Petrov). The city is a starting tourist destination for exploring the natural and cultural attractions of South Moravia. To the northeast of Brno begins the Moravian Karst Protected Landscape Area, and to the south lie vineyards with wine cellars.
