Mariazell is a town located in the Austrian federal state of Styria, which is Austria’s largest pilgrimage site and one of the most important Marian shrines in Central Europe.
The town is a center of both summer and winter tourism, so besides visiting the basilica, many other tourist attractions in the surrounding area are worth seeing. Notable is the Bürgeralpe viewpoint peak (1,254 m) located above the town. The Gemeindealpe peak (1,626 m) is a starting point for hiking in the mountains. At the same time, it is also a center of winter sports, especially downhill skiing and snowboarding, where skiers can use one of eleven ski runs.
