Smižany, with its 8,791 (2010) inhabitants, is the largest municipality in the Slovak Republic and has more inhabitants than some smaller towns. The municipality is located in the immediate vicinity of Spišská Nová Ves and also borders the Slovak Paradise National Park. The nearest starting point for hiking trails, Čingov, is located two kilometers southwest of the municipality.
