Žatec is located in the southwestern part of the Ústí nad Labem Region, on the southern edge of the Most Basin in the foothills of the Doupov Mountains. South of the town lies the Džbán Nature Park. Upstream on the Ohře River is the Nechranice Reservoir with the longest earthfill dam in Central Europe.
The area for which Žatec is the center became famous for hop cultivation. Hop growing is also the inspiration for the annual hop harvest festival – the so-called Dočesná. The town has a hop museum, the important Hop Research Institute, and the headquarters of many companies engaged in trading this commodity.
