On the map
The town of Chomutov lies at the foot of the Ore Mountains in northwestern Bohemia. The first mention of the town itself dates from 1252, when the small town of Chomutov was acquired by the Teutonic Knights. After 1411, King Wenceslas IV took it from the order, and a number of feudal owners succeeded one another there. As early as the 16th century, alum was mined near the town.
Among the sights of Chomutov are the Holy Trinity column on 1 May Square, the Gothic Church of St. Catherine, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and the Jesuit college.
In the vicinity of the alum lake is the Podkrušnohorský Zoopark. It is a zoological park focused on breeding European and Asian animals (wolf, bison, bear, seal, etc.). The Zoopark borders Kamencové Lake on the northern side and, by area, is the largest zoo in the Czech Republic.
