Kroměříž, nicknamed the Haná Athens, is a district town in the Zlín Region. It lies on the Morava River and has just under 30,000 inhabitants.
The first written record of Kroměříž dates from 1110. The town was founded by the Olomouc bishop Bruno von Schauenburg in 1260. The Olomouc bishops built a representative summer residence in Kroměříž and moved part of the diocese administration here. During the Thirty Years’ War the town suffered greatly, twice in succession from raids by Swedish troops (1643 and 1645) and subsequently from the plague. In the 1660s the Olomouc bishop Charles II of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn began an extensive renewal of the town. In 1848 the Constituent Imperial Diet met in Kroměříž. In 1997 Kroměříž was declared the most beautiful historic town in the Czech Republic, and a year later the local Archbishop’s Palace, together with the Flower Garden and the Castle Garden, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List.
