The City of Přerov is an important transportation hub. Together with Olomouc, Prostějov, Šumperk, and Hranice, it forms the industrially and economically strongest part of the Olomouc Region.
Excavations of a significant number of mammoth bones have been found here; a site of mammoth-hunter camps from 27,000–26,000 years ago is located at a place called Skalka. It is therefore often called the city of mammoths.
The city’s historic center is located around Horní Square—houses from the 15th century can be found here. Nearby is Přerov Castle, a Renaissance four-wing castle complex from the first quarter of the 17th century, built on the site of the original castle, whose tower has Romanesque origins. You can also see remnants of the city walls. The Castle houses the Comenius Museum.
